Buying a drone in the US in 2026: what changed
December 22, 2025 — the FCC Covered List
The FCC added DJI, Autel and other foreign-made drones and critical components to its Covered List. Covered equipment cannot receive new FCC equipment authorizations — and without authorization, a drone cannot be imported, marketed or sold in the United States. In plain terms: new DJI and Autel models launched after that date cannot be sold in the US. Nothing about the listing reaches back: models authorized before the cutoff stay legal.
What stays perfectly legal
Any drone that held FCC authorization before December 22, 2025 remains legal to buy, sell, own and fly — new-old stock at dealers, and the secondhand market. If you already own a DJI or Autel drone, keep flying it; the listing does not ground a single aircraft already in the country.

The practical effect: covered-model stock is finite, prices are drifting up, and parts will get scarcer before they get easier.
Firmware and support
An FCC waiver keeps firmware and security updates flowing for models authorized before the cutoff until January 1, 2029 — existing owners are not cut off from patches.
US-made and non-covered alternatives
Anzu Robotics (US-assembled drones built on licensed DJI technology), Skydio, Parrot (US models) and Teledyne FLIR are not on the Covered List and remain fully importable — several are Blue UAS cleared for government work. Non-covered imports such as Potensic and HoverAir, and toy-class drones, also stay freely available.

Can I still buy a DJI drone in the United States in 2026?
Yes — models that received FCC authorization before the December 22, 2025 Covered List cutoff remain legal to buy, sell, own and fly, and dealers still hold stock. What you cannot buy is a brand-new DJI model launched after the cutoff: without FCC authorization it cannot be imported or sold in the US.
What exactly did the FCC Covered List change?
On December 22, 2025 the FCC added DJI, Autel and other foreign-made drones and critical components to its Covered List. Covered equipment cannot receive new FCC equipment authorizations, and authorization is what a radio device needs to be imported, marketed or sold in the United States. The listing is forward-looking: it does not ban drones people already own.
What tariffs apply to drones since September 3, 2026?
A Section 232 proclamation added tariffs on imported drones effective September 3, 2026: 25% on most consumer drones, and 100% on thermal-equipped aircraft, heavy-lift drones over 55 lb, docking stations and listed components. Expect thinner stock and higher prices on covered models.
Will my DJI drone keep getting firmware updates?
Yes, for now. An FCC waiver keeps firmware and security updates flowing for models authorized before the cutoff until January 1, 2029, so existing owners are not cut off from patches.
What are the US-made or non-covered alternatives?
US-made lines such as Anzu Robotics (US-assembled designs licensed from DJI technology), Skydio, Parrot's US models and Teledyne FLIR are not on the Covered List and remain fully importable. Several non-covered imports — Potensic, HoverAir and toy-class drones — also stay freely available. The green badge on this page marks them.
